low carbon livingWhen it comes to CARBON namely CO2 we all are producing too much. So, to prevent the world's climate from becoming unhealthy and unsustainable, we all need to work towards a lower-carbon greener lifestyle.
Transport is the worlds biggest cause of carbon pollution - Try and avoid flying. Those cheap flights may seem tempting but they are killing the atmosphere and are they really necessary? Would you not be better off holidaying in welcoming Wales or the beautiful Devon countryside or even those clean unspoilt beeches in Ayrshire. Those cheap flights leading to overseas holidays are not essential. Nor is it much fun to travel these days.
- Buses and coaches seem noisy and smoky but because you are sharing them with up to 90 other passengers can be environmentally more efficient.
- Drive Clean. Get a clean LPG, Bio-Diesel or Hybrid car. Gas guzzling heavy cars use more fuel and so are also less friendly on your pocket as well as the environment.
- Use the shortest route, plan ahead or get a GPS navigator like Navman or TomTom.
- Take the train or tube. Electric transport is clean and efficient.
Home power
8% of electricity consumed at home is from items we aren't using - so don't leave the TV and other things on "standby". - Domestic appliances such as fridges and cookers. You can now buy various items to reduce your energy use. A brand new condensing boiler installed by specialists such as SmartBuild can reduce your bills by 50% and lower your carbon output. If you are buying new kitchen appliances, make sure they are "A-rated" as they use less energy.
- Green electricity: Switch to a renewable electricity tariff - it needn't cost anything extra but shows your commitment to a renewable future and hopefully one day soon all electric will be from renewable sources such a wind or wave power..
- Lighting: energy efficient lamps are now available for most types of fitting. Florescent tubes and low voltage LEDs are both attractive and last up to 20 times longer than traditional light bulbs. So are kinder to your purse too..
- Insulate your home properly. Extra layers mean lower fuel bills and help keep more of that heat you have paid for. The Energy Saving Trust provides free advice.
Food
Buy locally grown food always. Supermarkets are full of foods flown in from half way round the planet. Why? We produce everything you could possibly want right here in the UK. Buying British cuts down on the air miles and so is environmentally friendly.. - Pick your own fruit or vegetables. There are loads of farms that offer this service, food tastes better because its fresh and no transport, storage, processing means less harm to the environment.
- Look for produce made locally or made in the UK like Scotch beef or Welsh lamb or Somerset Brie. Less miles means less pollution. Or visit farmers markets
- Organic food is less reliant on fossil fuels for its production and does less damage to soil. But be careful food labelled as organic very often is not so beware. soil association
- Grow your own. Seems obvious but really do try this at home!
- Order a Pizza. Yes ordering in cooked food such as pizza delivered on a 50cc moped saves on your fuel use if you drive to restaurants and is cheaper than getting a parking ticket. Commercial food production is usually more fuel efficient too. pizza
